HorsePower! is one of only a handful of North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA)-accredited therapeutic equine centers located in Washington State. Across the United States there are now almost 700 therapeutic riding programs, serving an estimated 30,000 individuals with disabilities.

Professional organizations that currently recognize equine-facilitated therapy include: the American Occupational Therapy Association, the American Physical Therapy Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Special Olympics, the Spina Bifida Association and the United Cerebral Palsy Association .

Who Benefits?

Therapeutic riding is a widely-recognized treatment for people with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disorder, autism, ADHD, Down syndrome and many other conditions. Riders improve their muscle tone, balance, coordination, and communication skills.

The horse's movement almost perfectly simulates a healthy human walk-creating a natural therapy tool. The horse's rhythmical gait inspires the rider's whole body to respond. Riding generates positive physical, cognitive and social changes.
